located on the Bukit peninsula, on the island of Bali, Indonesia. The beach provides basic accommodation and
cafes for surfers and day-trippers. One of the most beautiful beaches on the
island, it is also renowned for its dangerous shorebreak. It is the site of the
failed Pecatu
Graha development,
planned by Tommy Suharto, the corrupt youngest son of the former
president Suharto. As of 2008 this is an active building site with all the previous
Warongs having been levelled for a hotel complex.
Legian
beach
Is a no-holds barred beach
where locals, expatriates and tourists mingle, bargain with the best, play
paddle ball and football, indulge in a massage and manicure, catch up on
reading, meditate, exercise, you name it. The
two camps are easily recognized; the workers have as many clothes on as
possible and the westeners wear as little as possible. Be prepared for scantily
clad Brazilians, G-stringed Italians, copper toned Germans, Australians in
designer surf gear and pretty Indonesian girls in multi-platform sandals - it
is the united nations of beaches. Sunset
is peak time at Legian Beach, when the beach bars fill up, the football
field is at its busiest and the locals knock off work and wade fully clothed,
skirts swirling, into the waves.
Padangbai Beach
Padangbai is a small town in eastern Bali, Indonesia near Candidasa. It serves as a ferry port for travel to Lombok, The Gilis and other of the Lesser Sunda Islands. It is also a lovely beach town that is
popular with those who prefer a small town atmosphere over the large scale
beach party that is Kuta. Besides
the beach near the ferry terminal there is a beach just to the north known
locally as the Blue Lagoon and the
especially nice Secret Beach just to the
south of town. Blue Lagoon has two family owned warungs that will be glad to
prepare a meal and serve beer. Many people go to Padangbai to Scuba Dive.
Candi
Dasa Beach
Candi Dasa is the gateway to
east Bali. The beach here has been mostly washed away due to the heavy coral
picking that used to provide a livelihood for locals. This has now been stopped
and tidal walls have been erected in an effort to restore the beach. Slowly the
coral is returning, and Candi Dasa is developing as a popular tourist
destination. Amankila at Candi Dasa has a
lovely beach club which tourists can visit for a daily fee – use the beach and
the pool and enjoy delicious food at their restaurant.
